Minimize Chances of Encountering a Bear

The East Longmeadow Animal Control and Board of Health would like residents to know there has been at least one bear spotted in town recently. Although it is not uncommon for bears to be in town, residents should take steps to minimize their chances of encountering a bear.

*Please bring your bird feeders in (birds have plenty of food available for them in the spring and summer)

*Secure your trash barrels

*Grills should be kept clean of any drippings

*Check to make sure it is safe to let your pet out before you do

*Bring in any pet food left outside

If you do encounter a bear

*Make yourself look as big as possible

*Make as much noise as possible (bang pots and pans together)

*turn on lights outside

*In the very rare case the bear does attack, don't play dead, fight back

For more information please visit the Massachusetts fish and wildlife website or their information about living with bears at https://www.mass.gov/files/2017-08/living-with-bears.pdf
