[ARCHIVED] Elm Street Reconstruction- Update July 14th, 2014

General - Road reclamation (pulverizing the road surface and blending it with the underlying gravel) began on Monday July 14th as scheduled and is expected to continue with Palmer Paving’s crews heading northward to the Springfield line at a rate of about 1,500 feet of road surface per day. Weather permitting, the reclamation work should be completed no later than July 25th with regrading and paving activities to follow.

After each segment of the road surface has been reclaimed, Palmer’s crews will typically spend the next 1-2 weeks regrading and reshaping the road surface. During this period drivers should use caution and expect dusty conditions since they will be travelling on a compacted gravel surface until the base course of pavement has been completed. Once this has occurred, Palmer, Columbia Gas and Town crews will be making adjustments to utility structures so that the final course of pavement can be placed along the entire street by mid August.

Elm Street Residents – Residents should be aware that multiple pieces of heavy equipment will be operating along Elm Street throughout the day and traffic delays are to be expected. Access to your driveway may be temporarily restricted however emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times. To see the expected work zones visit the following page, and click the link "Elm Street Work Zones".

The Department of Public Works and Palmer Paving will do our best to accommodate your access needs but you should expect some delays particularly when equipment is operating in front of your property. We greatly appreciates your patience and look forward to a greatly improved Elm Street when the project is completed later this summer.

Traffic Alert - Drivers are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes when travelling between East Longmeadow and Springfield including North Main Street, Harkness Avenue, and Allen Street to Parker Street. For much of the week of July 14th, Elm Street will be closed at the rotary except to local residents and businesses. Travel on Mapleshade Avenue will also be restricted at times. See the attached map for alternate routes.

Please contact the East Longmeadow DPW at 513-525-5400 ext 3 with any questions regarding this project.
