[ARCHIVED] Board of Health Member Search

The Town is Seeking:
A minimum of 1 MD, and 2 public health professionals to serve on the Board of Health. Candidates will be appointed with a 1, 2, or 3 year term at the discretion of the Town Manager. Ideal candidates will have 5+ years experience in public health, health education, environmental health, or regulation development.

About Public Health and the Board:

Public health is concerned with the health of the community as a whole, meaning, the purpose of public health is to prevent disease, not treat it. In Massachusetts, each Town and City is individually responsible for all public health mandates, regardless of its size. Some examples of public health initiatives are vaccinations, seat belts, infections disease control, safer/healthier foods and recognition of tobacco as a health hazard.

The East Longmeadow Board of Health is a three-member board, comprised of volunteers appointed by the town manager for three-year, overlapping terms, one of which must be a MD. All meetings of the board of health are subject to the rules of open meeting law.

The Board is charged with:

-Enforcement of the State Sanitary and Environmental Codes, reporting and control of diseases dangerous to the public, and the enforcement of other applicable state and local laws and regulations created to protect the health of all citizens.

- Developing reasonable regulations in multiple areas of environmental health.

- Holding hearings at the request of anyone issued an order to correct by the Health Director. The Board shall decide on the validity of the order/grievance as it relates to the rules it is obligated to uphold.

Additional Responsibilities:

- To stay current on any regulatory changes that may impact their ability to effectively create policies for the town.

- May need to attend state led conferences or training for Board of Health members.

- The board may be required to meet with the Town Manger or Town counsel at their request, or to inform them of developing concerns in town.

- The chair will work closely with the Health Director to create continuity and a joint approach to public health in the town of East Longmeadow.

All interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and a resume with relevant public health experience. Resumes should be received no later than September 30, 2016 at the Town Managers office or emailed to
