Fire Education and Community Risk Reduction
In The Schools
The East Longmeadow Fire Department works directly with the East Longmeadow Public Schools educating school age children with fire and life safety education programs.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services provides resources through a state initiative known as the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program.
Fire Educators stress several key fire safety behaviors with age and developmentally appropriate lessons. These include:

- Stop, drop, and roll
- Making and practicing home escape plans
- Reporting fire and emergencies
- Crawl low under smoke
- Smoke detector awareness & maintenance
- Kitchen safety
- Firefighters as community helpers
- Holiday safety and more
In The Community
For Older Adults
Fire safety and fall prevention programs aimed at our older adults is a priority for the East Longmeadow Fire Department. We have partnered with the Council on Aging to deliver programs designed to identify fire and fall hazards in the home. These programs are made possible with grant money provided by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services as part of the State's Senior SAFE initiative.
For Everyone
Our Fire and Life Safety Education program is available for private preschools, civic groups, and local youth organizations such as cub scouts and girl scouts. Delivering life saving information is the best tool we have to keep East Longmeadow residents safe and educated.
