How to Apply for a Marriage License

To apply for a marriage license, or filing for your "marriage intentions", both parties have to appear at the Clerk's Office with a photo id (usually a drivers license).  The fee to apply is $40, which can be paid in cash, check or card (with a small additional convenience fee).

There are three forms to fill out, which will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.  From the day you apply there is a 3 day waiting period, which is a MA state law, before the license can be picked up.  Either one or both parties should come do that since the license will have to be reviewed and proofread for accuracy.

From the day you apply, the license will be active for 60 days beyond that and then expire. Therefore, you want to make sure you don't want to get married within 3 days of the day you apply, or more that 60 days out from the day you apply.  In addition, this license is acceptable for getting married anywhere in the state of MA and no other state.

We are open Monday thru Friday, from 8am-4pm, so come in anytime between 8am-3:30 pm to leave time to complete the forms and have a Clerk's Office staff member review with you.
